Reporting LGBT hate crime and discrimination by text
Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in Coventry can now report hate crime and discrimination by text message.
The new text line – 07939 193443 – has been set up by the Coventry Hate Crime Reduction Partnership following requests from the local LGBT community during consultations by Coventry City Council.
The text line can be used to report a range of hate crimes and discrimination to the Hate Crime Reduction Partnership, part of the Coventry Community Safety Partnership. Anyone using the service is being encouraged to give as many details as possible including what happened, when and where it happened and who else was involved.
Cllr Andy Matchet, Coventry City Council Cabinet Member (Health and Housing) with responsibility for community safety, said: "Hate crime is something we in Coventry are working hard to tackle.
"We know some members of the gay community are reluctant to report hate crimes for a variety of reasons and we have already set up a network of independent reporting centres.
"The LGBT community have themselves told us that the easiest way for many people to report incidents of hate crime and discrimination is by sending text messages from their mobile phones. This is a quick way of reporting incidents as soon as they have happened.
"As local public agencies we will investigate and try to address the incidents reported."
LGBT Community Forum spokesperson Vicky Millard said: "It's important to report incidents so we can bring attention of some of the problems the LGBT community faces to the fore.
"One of the key concerns of the gay community is discrimination in the night time economy like taxis avoiding gay venues and doorstaff showing homophobic attitudes. The text line is an ideal way for reporting discrimination of this kind quickly and easily and gives people the opportunity to remain anonymous."
